Nie Shuangxi’s love for papermaking was discovered when he was studying under Professor Wang Shuangfei at the university and often soaked in the laboratory.

In 2006, Nie Shuangxi took the college entrance examination. Like many ordinary middle school students, he doesn’t have a clear plan for his future, and he doesn’t even know his hobbies. When he volunteered for the college entrance examination, he chose the major of light chemical engineering in Guangxi University. He believes that light chemical products have become an indispensable material for all relevant departments of the national economy and a necessity for people’s daily life, and the work prospect of this major should be good.

After entering the university as he wished, Nie Shuangxi discovered that this major is actually all-encompassing, involving pulp and paper, fine chemicals, light industry and environmental protection. In his professional study, he often had to do various chemical experiments, from which he found pleasure. It was at this time that he found that his interest was more inclined to chemistry. In the light chemical engineering, papermaking, a traditional industry with a long history in China, has attracted him a lot. In this way, he made clear the direction of his future efforts and chose to deepen the paper industry.

However, with the enhancement of people’s awareness of environmental protection, and paperless operation has gradually moved from concept to practical application, many people think that paper will gradually withdraw from the historical stage and the paper industry will gradually decline. Of course, some people are bearish and some people are optimistic. Nie Shuangxi believes that the reason why the public is not optimistic is because the paper in their eyes is often limited to writing paper. In fact, in addition to the increasing consumption of household paper, the multi-application scenarios of special paper have also opened up a new direction for the development of the paper industry, and the overall development trend of the industry is still improving. Facts have proved that Nie Shuangxi’s judgment was correct. According to the survey data of China Paper Association, the national paper and paperboard production in 2019 was 107.65 million tons, an increase of 3.16% over the previous year. The consumption was 107.04 million tons, up by 2.54% over the previous year. According to the statistics of the National Bureau of Statistics, the main business income of 2524 papermaking enterprises from January to December 2019 was 765 billion. In 2019, the average annual growth rate of production and consumption of household paper was 5.51% and 5.65% respectively.

In 2010, after graduating from college, Nie Shuangxi chose to continue to study with Teacher Wang Shuangfei, specializing in clean pulping and papermaking. After graduating from Ph.D., he worked in the front line of teaching and scientific research and made outstanding contributions to the development of disciplines and the promotion of technological progress in the industry. He participated in the research project "Key Technologies and Applications of Typical Wastewater Recycling and Ultra-low Emission in Papermaking and Fermentation" and won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2016; As a key member, he completed the scientific research project "Large-scale chlorine dioxide preparation system and key technology and application of chlorine-free bleaching of pulp", which won the second prize of Guangxi Science and Technology Progress Award in 2017, the first prize of Technology Invention Award of Ministry of Education in 2018 and the second prize of National Technology Invention Award in 2019.

Breaking the technological monopoly of multinational corporations

The most interesting thing about Nie Shuangxi and his team is that they have made great breakthroughs in the preparation and application technology of chlorine dioxide, breaking the monopoly of foreign companies on China’s pulp bleaching chlorine dioxide preparation technology, making China jump from an importer of chlorine dioxide preparation technology to an exporter, and promoting the leap-forward development of clean bleaching technology in China’s paper industry.

When it comes to the paper industry, the public first thinks that it is often pollution. Indeed, in the past, domestic paper-making enterprises used the traditional chlorine-containing bleaching method to bleach pulp. These chlorine-containing bleaching agents are easy to form chlorinated hydrocarbons, chlorophenols, chloramines, etc., which are harmful to fish and human bodies, and will also pollute underground water sources and the environment, which is not conducive to environmental protection. This traditional practice was eliminated by developed countries in North America and Europe as early as 1990, and chlorine dioxide clean bleaching technology was used instead. Compared with chlorine-containing bleaching agents, chlorine dioxide not only has better bleaching performance, but also does not form harmful substances.

However, at that time, the preparation technology of chlorine dioxide was monopolized by several large companies in Sweden and Canada. If Chinese enterprises want to adopt this technology, they must import it in full. As a result, not only the purchase of equipment is expensive, but also the later maintenance cost is very high. For chlorine dioxide, there is a huge demand in the domestic market, but at the same time the technology faces shortcomings. Therefore, with the original intention of "solving the problem of backward technology and improving the level of clean papermaking", Nie Shuangxi’s R&D team focused on this and began to develop a new generation of chlorine dioxide preparation and bleaching technology.

In 2010, the first chlorine dioxide preparation system developed by Nie Shuangxi’s team finally ran successfully. Once the products were put on the market, the sales were very hot, which not only broke the foreign technology monopoly, but also produced good economic benefits. "The level of our technology is basically the same as that of foreign countries, but the cost is only 1/4 to 1/3 of that of imports, so it is very competitive." Good products bring good reputation. Soon, foreign companies also heard the news. In 2013, the whole set of technology was successfully exported overseas. At present, it has been widely used in large paper enterprises in ASEAN countries such as Indonesia, India and Thailand, providing an economical and effective solution to the pollution problems brought by paper enterprises in various countries.
