The Yellow River is an ecological corridor connecting the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Loess Plateau and the North China Plain.

Four thousand years ago, three Chinese ancestors, Huangdi, Yandi and Chiyou, thrived in the Yellow River Basin.

The administrative centers of Xi ‘an and Luoyang in the 13th dynasty, Kaifeng in the 8th dynasty and Anyang in the 7th dynasty were all in the Yellow River basin. There are 1,593 recorded breakwaters in the lower reaches of the Yellow River, which must be broken every three years on average.

The construction of the Three-North Shelterbelt effectively controls the loss of sediment on the Loess Plateau. Sanjiangyuan Ecological Protection Zone has steadily improved the water conservation capacity of the upstream.
