Yang Xiumin is a senior engineer of National Defense Engineering Research Institute of Academy of Military Sciences and an academician of China Academy of Engineering. He has been engaged in theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, urban disaster prediction and other research work for a long time, and has put forward many innovative viewpoints and theoretical models, and achieved many high-level research results.
People who have come into contact with him have all kinds of comments on him. Some people say that he is amiable and familiar with literature and history, like a rural teacher; His students rated him as stubborn, stern and even "eccentric"; But he said, "I was ‘ Peach Blossom Garden middleman ’ " .
Yang Xiumin is 76 years old. He has worked hard in the fields of computational mechanics and numerical simulation for decades. This job is very boring and hard, just as he said in a doggerel, "Sleeping at night and smoking to satisfy hunger, thinking in the morning will give you tea to make soup." Sometimes he ignores chores and almost becomes a "peach blossom spring middleman."
When Yang Xiumin was in middle school, he preferred literature and history. When he was admitted to the university, he originally wanted to apply to the Chinese Department of Peking University, but the class teacher advised him to engage in science and technology, so he applied to the University of Science and Technology of China. However, he has always retained his interest in literature and history and likes to buy related books. When I first joined the army, although I had less money, I had to save money to buy my favorite books. Later, my salary increased and it became more and more out of control. Now, in his home, he has basically bought all the twenty-four histories, classical poems and hundred schools of thought.
He thinks that some of these books are read casually and some are read carefully, which makes him feel very interesting. The classics of literature, history and philosophy are the carriers of China’s traditional thoughts and virtues. As a professional and technical person, reading books in this field often can not only cultivate sentiment, but also help to open up ideas and increase critical thinking ability, which is of great benefit to improving the writing level of professional and technical articles.
In 1985, his research direction turned to conventional weapons protection research. He applied the fluid elasto-plastic model proposed by Academician Zheng Zhemin to the theoretical analysis of ground-contact nuclear explosion, and took the lead in completing the two-dimensional numerical simulation calculation of the law of explosion pit formation and ground motion. In 1995, he was elected as an academician of China Academy of Engineering. He devoted himself to the research on the near-field destruction effect of explosion impact after the conventional guided warhead hit the target, led doctoral students to compile a numerical computer software package of explosion impact with independent intellectual property rights, established a three-dimensional numerical simulation platform for weapon destruction effect, and completed a series of key topics such as the thickness of safety protective layer for repeated strikes of multiple bombs, which provided a scientific basis for compiling a new version of engineering design specifications. Since I joined the work, I have published 4 monographs and more than 100 papers.
At that time, the research on the protection of precision guided conventional weapons had just started. Because foreign software had made many restrictions on domestic research, he was determined to independently develop calculation software. In those years, Yang Xiumin and his team members worked overtime for a long time, and his spine was deformed due to overwork, and the pain was unbearable. He often encourages everyone to have the determination to sharpen a sword and sit on the bench for ten years. Finally, in the tenth year, they succeeded. According to this calculation software package, Yang Xiumin found the destruction limit of a new weapon and broke many false conclusions.
He lived apart from his family for 18 years and participated in a major military scientific research project for six times. In order to get more accurate data, Yang Xiumin sneaked into the center of the crater to measure the data regardless of the danger of radiation. In order to save time, he often eats lunch on the proving ground in the sand. After 12 years of research, this project won the second prize of national scientific and technological progress.
Since he was elected as an academician for more than 20 years, Yang Xiumin has trained 10 doctoral students, and the scientific research team he directed has won 2 second prizes for national scientific and technological progress, 6 first prizes and 18 second prizes for military scientific and technological progress. However, he always insisted on not signing his name in any achievement. He often said, "Mentors and apprentices discuss rock climbing plans, and young people are needed to reach the top."
